About Nawa
Nawa Studio grew out of a wish to give the Gothenburg rope scene a place of its own. A room where you can practise, try something new and get to know others at a calm pace. Nawa Studio have a strong belief that Peer-to-peer learning is the way to go and we want to create a strong community that co-creates together.
Nawa (縄) means rope in Japanese, and that is exactly what everything here revolves around: rope as a tool, as a language, as a meeting place.
The studio is run by WestCoast Kinbaku (WCK), a non-profit association that organises events, workshops and play events for the rope scene on the west coast. We believe connection, consent and sharing knowledge are the foundation of all rope work. We work for a scene where curious beginners and experienced riggers alike feel at home.
Kinbaku means tying with intention. That is something we believe in very strongly and apply in the way we play.
We regularly hold beginner workshops, open rope events and safety talks.

Nawa Studio is kept going by people who tie, teach and organise. Here are some of them.
Polly has been tying since 2016 and teaching beginner classes since 2018.
She mixes classical patterns and conventions with wordless communication, and likes working on the floor or with furniture. Teaching beginners is a particular focus.
Rope is for everyone who wants it, and any limitation can always be worked around.

Mattisdottir discovered shibari in 2020 and went deeper in 2022.
To her, rope can be play, closeness, chaos and calm, and a way of coming closer to herself and her partner. Consent, safety and communication are central to everything she does.
She runs workshops focused on flow, creativity and presence.

Savia started as a bunny and taught herself to tie three years ago.
She is drawn to communication, patterns, tension and detail, and to the presence and vulnerability rope can create. Today she is both the one tied and the one tying.
